Refinishing kitchen cabinets vs replacing them

A sprayed cabinet finish changes a kitchen for a fraction of a full remodel. What the process involves, and when refinishing isn't the answer.

August 27, 2026 · 4 min read · Cabinets

When refinishing makes sense

If the boxes are solid and the layout works, refinishing is usually the better value. Dated honey oak or worn wood becomes a clean, modern finish without tearing the kitchen apart or living without counters for weeks.

If doors are delaminating, boxes are water damaged, or you want a different layout, that's a replacement conversation — not a paint one. We'll tell you when that's the case.

How we do it

  • Doors and drawer fronts come off and are labelled so everything goes back where it belongs
  • Everything gets degreased — kitchen grease is the main reason cabinet finishes fail
  • Sanding to give the new coating something to bite into
  • Bonding primer, then sprayed finish coats for a smooth, factory-style surface
  • Cure time before we rehang — rushing this is how you get fingerprints in the finish

What it costs

Cabinet refinishing pricing is published on our pricing page so you can budget before we visit. The range depends on door count, condition and whether trim and an island are included.
